F-ck yeah!
I'm a big fan of the King. This shows a side of Elvis and provides a historical perspective I've not seen before. Pretty awesome
Some background. Elvis came onto the music scene in the mid-1950s. He dominated that space in a way nobody had before (even bigger than Sinatra). Then around 1961 he stopped performing and didn't return to a stage for 7 years. Col Tom Parker had isolated Elvis in Hollywood being the nation's top-paid actor turning out lousy movies, and removing the star from his audience and what gave him the most joy.
In 1968, Elvis was in trouble. The Beatles and Stones had taken the nation by storm, Civil Rights issues and Vietnam were raging, and the King had become ancient history.
His 1968 CBS special was his chance to either make a courageous comeback and become relevant again or fade into obscurity. The person who emerged from the special might be the greatest performer to roam the pop music scene ever!
